What in the world does horticulture or landscape design have to do with Takashi Amano? He is considered the first Aquascaper. He pioneered the science of aqua horticulture - experiementing with plants and the use of Carbon Dioxide injections, even a special shrimp to create a thriving living aquarium like never seen before.
Watching fish swim around in an aquarium is somewhat relaxing, but with his designs, you were now looking at forests and mountains teeming with lush vegetation - and what do you see in the sky? Is it a flock of graceful birds? Wait a minute- it's a school of fish, swiming gracefully, yet with the compositional effect of flying gracefully across the sky. Ahh, now that's mesmerizing!
The last project he installed before he died was for the Lisbon Oceanarium in Portugal. it is the largest Nature Aquarium in the world at 40-metres long and 160 thousand litres of freshwater. I was fortunate enough to come across this temporary exhibit while in Portugal and was so thrilled to see it! It's hard to photograph because its long as opposed to high, but you can see more here: Amano Takashi
